Autónomo: how do I help prepare for registration?

An autónomo is a self-employed person. Before registering, it helps to describe your planned business activities and gather some basic information. This makes it easier to identify the appropriate registrations and tax arrangements for the business.

Start by describing your business

Explain what you will do, for whom and where. Services for private individuals need a different assessment from work for businesses in Spain or abroad. Include your planned start date and whether you intend to rent premises or hire employees.

Prepare your registration details

  • Your identity document and NIE, the Spanish identification number for foreign nationals.
  • Your Seguridad Social number for the Spanish social security system, if already issued.
  • Your home address and business location.
  • Your planned start date and estimated income and expenses.
  • The bank account number for contribution payments and your contact details.
  • Information about any previous self-employment, employment and benefits you receive.

Tax and social security registrations are separate

Registration with AEAT, the Spanish tax authority, and registration with Seguridad Social serve different purposes. Modelo 036 is used for a typical tax registration. IAE and CNAE codes describe the type of business activity; they should match the services you actually provide.

In the Canary Islands, we also check your obligations to ATC, the Canary Islands tax authority. These may include Modelo 400, IGIC — the Canary Islands indirect tax — and possible application of REPEP, the special scheme for small businesses and professionals. We do not assume that the same tax arrangements apply to every business.

What information do I need to start?

A short description of your planned business, its location and your expected start date. We can then identify the information and documents needed for your situation. You do not need to choose the forms or business activity codes yourself.

How can I help?

Business registration, ongoing accounting and tax returns. Support with your obligations to the authorities.
